---NAACP Celebrates Youth Week,
April 29-May 4---
The NAACP will celebrate Youth Week 2001 from Sunday,
April 29 through Saturday, May 4, 2001. During this
week, the NAACP Youth, College and Young Adult Divisions
will conduct mobilization, educational and informative
programs in nine cities. NAACP President Kweisi Mfume
said "Youth Week is an opportunity for young people
across the country to highlight the issues most affecting
their generation and collectively develop strategies
to overcome them." During youth week, there will
be a different event for each day in Philadelphia,PA,
Gary, IN, Miami, FL, Dallas, TX, Cleveland, OH, Richmond,
VA, Berkley, CA; Baltimore, MD and Raleigh, NC. The
planned activities cover a range of topics on health,
finances and the criminal justice system. Other activities
include town hall meetings, membership drives and oratorical
contests.
---African American business owners
to access $100 million in procurement opportunities---The
TPC Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated
to strengthening and developing African American owned
businesses through training, development, conferences
and symposiums, has announced its program to help African
American entrepreneurs access $100 million in corporate
and governmental procurement opportunities at the California
African American Business Summit 2001(CAABS 2001). The
Summit will be held May 31 - June 2, 2001 at the Hyatt
Regency in Irvine California. This fourth annual Summit
features such business notables as Ken Lombard, president
of Magic Johnson Development Company; Victoria Lowe,
president of Los Angeles County's largest woman-owned
business, Alert Staffing and procurement expert Beverly
Kuykendall, founder of Federal and Commercial Contracts.
CAABS 2001 will provide entrepreneurs with cutting edge
tools, technology and information needed to navigate
the newest business paradigm through workshops and panels.
In addition to meeting with corporate and government
procurement executives, the summit features workshops
and sessions on topics ranging from securing debt and
equity financing, using technology to increase productivity
and profitability and becoming more competitive through
alliances, mergers and acquisitions. Corporate partners
participating in the showcase include AT&T, UPS,
Wells Fargo Bank, Ford Motor Company, Turning Point
Magazine, Bank of America, The Disney Corporation, Merrill

ABC Radio Networks and New York City station WRKS-FM
have signed an agreement to broadcast "The Tom
Joyner Morning Show" on WRKS-FM (98.7 KISS-FM).
The leading national Urban morning show with an audience
of more than 8 million, "The Tom Joyner Morning
Show" will debut on WRKS-FM on April 30, and will
air from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. each weekday. Internationally
known as a singer, songwriter and actor, Isaac Hayes
joined the KISS family in 1996. With its broadcast on
WRKS-FM, "The Tom Joyner Morning Show" adds
the New York Metro area to its coverage of major U.S.
radio markets, including Chicago; Philadelphia; Boston;

---A homecoming for slave descendants---
From April 27 through 29, James Madison's Montpelier
will host the first-ever gathering of descendants of
slaves who once labored at Montpelier. Among the activities
scheduled for the three-day event are:a keynote address,
titled "The Human Cost of Our Democracy,"
by former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder. Wilder, the
grandson of Virginia slaves, was the first elected Black
governor in the United States. A Long Way From Home,
the most recent novel by best-selling author and Montpelier
slave descendant Connie Briscoe, is also based on family
lore about the lives of slaves at Montpelier. The slave
descendants' gathering is part of Montpelier's year-long
2001 celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth
of James Madison - Father of the Constitution, author
of the Bill of Rights, and President of the United States.

receives "Educator Award" ---
The Greater Hartford Club of the National Association
of Negro Business and Professional Women Clubs, Inc.
has named David G. Carter, President of Eastern Connecticut
State University, the recipient of the its "Educator
Award." The Award is the organization's highest
academic award and is given to "an individual who
clearly demonstrates outstanding contributions in the
field of education." Dr. Carter will be presented
the award at 34th Annual Founder's Day Scholarship and
Award Breakfast on April 21, 2001, at the Sheraton Hotel,
East Hartford, CT. Dr. Carter is widely published and
has co-authored and edited several books. Dr. Carter

The Acapulco Black Film Festival (ABFF), to be held
June 4-9, 2001, will celebrate its fifth anniversary
