---SIDS Nurse Expert Named 2001
Nurse of The Year
Bernetta Pearson, RN, BSN, has been selected as the
2001 Nursing Spectrum Nurse of the Year. Thanks to Pearson,
countless Chicago area children are alive, and their
parents and caregivers are educated about the dangers
of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Nursing
Spectrum National Advisory Board chose Pearson from
a group of six talented RNs from the Nursing Spectrum
editions across the country. Joining the SIDS Alliance
of Illinois as an educator, Pearson pounded the pavement
for more than two years, concentrating their efforts
in the African-American community, a population that's
been particularly hard-hit by SIDS. She spoke in physicians'
waiting rooms, washrooms, and even barrooms. She's muscled
her way into housing projects and neighborhoods where
others are reluctant to go. The results have been startling:
the SIDS death rate in Chicago has been cut in half.
