TO BILL COSBY'S CHALLENGE
African American Family Magazine, Detroit Public

forums in a community wide campaign and movement.
(AANEWSWIRE)DETROIT, MICHIGAN -- Parents,
teachers, pastors and community leaders unite in a
new collaboration featuring a community wide dialogue
on challenges facing local African American families
in broadcast series and town forum campaign, that
began with a one-hour special, RECLAIMING THE VILLAGE,
aired on Detroit's local PBS station, WTVS Channel
56 that began in September. The series continues through
October with televised discussions hosted by African
American Family Magazine editor Denise Crittendon
and facilitated by Detroit veteran broadcast journalist
Amyre Makupson.
RECLAIMING THE VILLAGE addresses issues
related to child rearing raised by entertainer Bill
Cosby in several speeches around the country including
one in Detroit earlier this year. In a recent Detroit
News article, Crittendon acknowledges Cosby for "waking
us [Black Americans] up" and getting Black people
to "talk about issues that we whisper in private."
The article references Crittendon's hope that the
discussions will 'move beyond the rhetoric."
Upcoming Reclaiming the Village topics to be broadcast
include "Pop Culture," to air on Sunday,
10/9 (7 p.m.), and Saturday, 10/15 (5 p.m.) and "Solutions,"
airing Monday, 10/17(10:30 p.m.), Sunday, 10/23, (7p.m.)
and Saturday, 10/29, (5p.m).The programs will also
air on WB20, the project's other broadcast partner.
Produced by African American Family
Magazine and Detroit Public
Television, in association with WB20-Detroit's WB!,
The Skillman
Foundation and The Detroit Youth Foundation, the campaign
examines the roles of family environment, education,
pop culture, and other factors in creating a village
where children can flourish.
Dr. Alvin Poussaint, a psychiatrist at Harvard University
and chief
consultant on the landmark television series, "The
Cosby Show," and close personal friend of Bill
Cosby, serves as the project consultant and provides
commentary on topics related to each broadcast.
Members of the community are invited after each televised
segment to attend a community-wide town hall meeting
on the same issues presented in the televised discussions.
