CHERYL COOPER LEAVES NCNW
TO PURSUE OTHER CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

(AANEWSWIRE)Washington, DC --- After
almost five years as the executive director of the
National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), Cheryl Cooper
has decided to move to the next phase of her professional
career when her contract expires this June.
Cooper said she appreciated having
"the extraordinary opportunity" of working
with Dr. Dorothy I. Height, Chair and President Emerita
of NCNW, and her "inspiring and remarkable leadership."
In her letter of resignation, dated
November 16, 2006, to Dr. Height, Cooper wrote, "Over
four years ago, you and the NCNW board of directors
gave me the honor of serving as the executive director
of this wonderful organization. During my tenure here,
I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing
people to help improve the lives of women of African
descent internationally. Most importantly, the experience
of working with you personally has helped me grow
as a woman and a professional."
Some of the many accomplishments during
Cooper's tenure at NCNW, include the creation of NCNW's
signature public education campaign entitled "African
American Women as We Age"(AAWA), a national initiative
to help women make better health and financial decisions.
Others include the publication of "Tomorrow Begins
Today," a self-help book, the creation of a women's
business incubator center in Senegal and securing
funding for the establishment of a Center for Research,
Public Policy and Information at NCNW.
Upon hearing of Cooper's impending
departure from NCNW, several major funders, including
Ms. Barbara Phillips, formerly NCNW's program officer
with the Ford Foundation, and Mr. Peter Greenwald,
formerly with RPS (funder of the AAWA initiative),
sent Cooper letters commending her for her accomplishments
at the organization.
Prior to joining NCNW, Cooper worked at AARP as Chief
of Staff, Director of Audit and Advisory Services
and Assistant Controller. She also served as Administrator
for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc.
A Certified Public Accountant, Cooper
received a B.S. in Business Administration from Georgetown,
majoring in Accounting. She has taken several Executive
Education courses at the Harvard University Graduate
School of Business. Cooper has sat on numerous boards
including the Alderwoods Group, the Washington Convention
Center Authority and the Ellington Fund.
