SIX-CITY MILLER URBAN ENTREPRENEURS SERIES WRAPS
UP ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON WITH STAR-STUDDED LINEUP;

$150,000 BUSINESS GRANT COMPETITION
UNDERWAY
MILWAUKEE (November 2003) - In Los Angeles, famed "Boondocks"
cartoonist Aaron McGruder put down his pen for a few
hours to draw a picture of successful black business
owners giving back to the communities from which they
came. In Chicago, Johnson Development Corporation's
Kenneth Lombard emphasized the importance of offering
the highest level of
services as black business owners. And in Washington,
D.C., Shannon Reeves, the illustrious and outspoken
co-owner of the Chevron Freedom Fund-and a four-term
president of the Oakland, Calif. NAACP-spoke about working
hard to get what you want.
These nationally known, high-profile business owners,
who took time out of their hectic schedules to act as
spokespersons for Miller Brewing Company's fourth-annual
Miller Urban Entrepre-neurs Series, offered sound and
valuable advice to hundreds of aspiring and current
business owners who attended these seminars across the
country. Upscale handbag and luggage designer Aina Cherry,
Sister Souljah, president of A Souljah's Story, and
Russell Simmons, CEO/President of Rush Communications,
also served as program keynote speakers in Atlanta,
Detroit and New York respectively.
"Be aware. Be awake. Be responsible," said
McGruder as he spoke to the crowd at the Los Angeles
seminar. "Understand that you have the power to
do good as a Black entrepreneur."
Taking place in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles,
New York and Washington, D.C., the Miller Urban Entrepreneurs
Series also featured panels with experts on business
plan development, raising capital, marketing and urban
business trends; past winners of the Miller Business
Grant Competition and live performances from Motown's
rising star Kem and Hidden Beach's Kindred at the Miller
Time Lounge. Miller also partnered with
Black Enterprise magazine and a non-profit organization
in each market-the Atlanta Business League, Chicago
Urban League, Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, Recycling
Black Dollars, Detroit Urban League and the Greater
Washington Urban League.
"Our goal is to provide these aspiring and budding
businesses with opportunities that aren't readily accessible,
offering tools that will help them craft and achieve
their business goals," said Karen McDowell, Miller
senior brand manager, trademark and business development.
Now that the Miller Urban Entrepreneurs Series is over,
participants can utilize the valuable information they've
learned in developing their business plans for the highly
anticipated, 2003 edition of the Miller Urban Entrepreneurs
Business Grant Competition, which this year will award
$150,000 to aspiring and current entrepreneurs (between
the ages of 21-30). The grand-prize winner from each
participating region will win $20,000; two finalists
from each region will be awarded $2,500.
All applications must be requested by November 7, 2003.
Entries for the business grant competition must be received
by November 17, 2003. Official rules and requirements
apply. Applicants must be 21-30 years of age to qualify.
