of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and
Host/Executive Producer, CBS4s Sunday with
Liz Walker
to deliver
36th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast Keynote
Address
Monday, January 16,
2006 at 8:00 am
Boston Convention Center, 415 Summer Street
The Rev. Liz Walker will offer the keynote address
at annual commemoration of the life and legacy of the
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sponsored by Union
United Methodist Church and St. Cyprian's Episcopal
Church for the past 36 years, this city-wide event will
provide community members with an opportunity to reflect,
recharge, and refocus their work and energies toward
justice, harmony and universal liberty.
The current polarization and divisiveness which
we witness today in our nation clearly demonstrates
what a formidable task we face in order to make Dr.
Kings dream a reality in our land, says
Rev. Martin D. McLee, pastor of the Union United Methodist
Church. This breakfast provides a forum for us
not only to give thanks for his outstanding contributions,
but also to reaffirm our commitment to accept the challenge
to hasten the day when, in Dr. Kings words, justice
will roll down like waters and righteousness like an
ever-flowing stream.
The MLK, Jr. Memorial Breakfast Committee will honor
the Liberty Mutual Foundation for its annual underwriting
of three $2000 college scholarships to seniors at the
Jeremiah E. Burke High School, the John D. OBryant
High School of Mathematics and Science, and the Madison
Park Technical Vocational High School.
The Committee will also recognize Citizens Bank for
underwriting certificates of deposit to each of five
eighth-grade students at the Orchard Gardens K-8 Schools
second annual art contest. Last years winners
each received certificates of deposit valued at $1000.
The annual breakfast is one of the oldest celebrations
of the life and legacy of Dr. King in the United States.
Past keynote speakers have included Bishop Vashti Murphy-McKenzie,
the African Methodist Episcopal Churchs first
woman bishop and Yolanda King, Dr. Kings eldest
daughter.
Music will be provided by St. Cyprians Celestial
Inferno Steel Band.
A 25-year veteran of CBS4, Rev. Walker received her
Masters of Divinity from Harvards Divinity
School last year. Rev. Walkers appearance is sponsored
by the Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare Foundation. She will
be available for questions at 7:30am.
Tickets are available to members of the general
public at $35.00 per person by calling Union United
Methodist Church at (617) 536-0872. Free shuttle service
will be available from South Station beginning at 7:00am.
