She truly practices what she ‘preaches’  -- and has taken her career all the way to the highest levels of corporations with positions on corporate boards of directors as well as leading as a CEO. Heard serves on the Boards of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Massachusetts; Liberty Mutual Group; CVS/Caremark Corporation; Sovereign Bank and BioSphere Medical and is also a long-term Trustee of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  She has held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the United Ways of New England and as President and Chief Executive Officer of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay in Boston, led this United Way from #87 to the #1 position in America in major gifts.

Currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Oxen Hill Partners, specialists in Leadership Development Programs and Brand Enhancement Strategies and located in Boston, MA. She has received numerous local, regional and national awards including the Farber Award for Innovative Health Initiatives from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute; the National Public Citizen Award from the National Association of Social Workers; the Others Award from the Salvation Army which is the highest civilian award given by that organization and the Warren Bennis International Leadership Award.  In addition, she has received the Buckley Orator Award and is a frequent speaker for commencements and professional organizations and is the recipient of 16 Honorary Doctorate Degrees. 

Heard has served as the Founding President and Chief Executive Officer of the Points of Light Foundation, organized to perpetuate President George Bush's  (#41) idea to make volunteerism central to the life of every American. She served two terms as the Chairman of the Board and remains as a member today, serving as a member of the Executive Committee.  President Bush serves as the Honorary Chairman.  She is also a Founding Member of MENTOR/the National Mentoring Partnership and serves as the Chairman of 1000 WOMEN FOR MENTORING, a national initiative to "help us help more kids."  Heard also served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Presidents’ Summit for America's Future which was Co-Chaired by Presidents Clinton and Bush, with participation by all Presidents. Retired General Colin Powell served as the Honorary Chairman and this was the largest domestic gathering focusing on one topic- America's youth - in the history of the country.

Mrs. Heard is a graduate of the University of Bridgeport with an Associate's Degree; the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a Bachelor's Degree in Business; an M.Ed. Degree from Springfield College in Education and Community Leadership and has also completed the Executive Leadership Program at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, focusing on Economics and Social Policy. As her career path and education path indicate, she is a shining example of the "continuous learning" model, believing that you must constantly prepare for the next professional opportunity.
