"When I Was Puerto Rican" with Esmeralda Santiago

Northeast Human Resources Association (NEHRA) will host its annual Diversity Dinner, "When I Was Puerto Rican" with Esmeralda Santiago, on Tuesday, February 25 from 5:30 - 8:30 pm at the Marriott Copley Place Hotel in Boston, MA.

"When I Was Puerto Rican" is a dynamic presentation by best selling author Esmeralda Santiago. Her ground-breaking memoirs, When I Was Puerto Rican and Almost A Woman have a transforming impact on her readers who she meets face to face in urban schools, universities, family shelters, libraries, prisons, and projects. Esmeralda jumps languages "double-dutch" moving fluently between English and Spanish without missing a beat, simultaneously translating her own words, thoughts...even the jokes. Dreaming in Spanish, writing in English, Esmeralda shares the joy and sorrow of living between two cultures.

Esmeralda's life and work are an ongoing exploration of how language and memory define who we are and what it means, truly, to be culturally ambidextrous. Like Muhammad Ali, she uses her celebrity to raise consciousness, and give voice to an emerging population. She encourages wide-eyed children and sobbing adults to face issues of race and social justice.
