Nancy Pelosi

---Pelosi Statement on 40th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 ---
Here is an excerpt from Speaker Nancy Pelosi's remarks regarding the 40th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, often known as the Fair Housing Act: "... we honor the 40th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1968--often known as the Fair Housing Act--landmark legislation designed to address widespread and insidious discrimination in housing. Much more needs to be done to fulfill the promise of the Fair Housing Act. Federal inaction in enforcing the housing discrimination laws has contributed to the current mortgage crisis, especially predatory lending practices designed to steer borrowers into more expensive loans." Forty years ago Democratic President and Texas native Lyndon Johnson signed the 1968 Civil Rights Act.

---"Every Woman Counts" Poll takes political pulse of women---
As part of its "Every Woman Counts" campaign to engage women in the political process, Lifetime Networks announced the results of a national poll of women which revealed, among other findings, that women's opinions of the candidates have been shifting since the primary elections began in January of this year. More than 40% of women say their opinion of Hillary Clinton and/or Barack Obama has changed since the start of 2008; 30% claimed the same about John McCain. Results also provide insight into how women perceive the media's focus on Hillary Clinton's gender, Barack Obama's race and John McCain's age, and how Democrats feel about the ongoing battle between Obama and Clinton. Hillary Clinton was the only candidate who registered a significant net change in public opinion since January: 26% of women surveyed said they like her less now compared to just 15% who said they like her more.  Six out of 10 (60%) women surveyed said their opinion of John McCain is not any different than it was a few months ago.  Forty-five percent said their opinion of Barack Obama changed since the start of primary season, with 23% saying they like him more and 22% reporting they like him less now.  The economy and jobs is the number 1 issue for women overall (38%), followed closely by health care, Medicare, and prescription drugs (31%) and the war in Iraq (28%).  Hillary Clinton supporters were equally likely to name economic issues and health care as most important, while Obama and McCain voters were more squarely focused on the economy and jobs.

---Passover Seder in Pittsburgh, PA---
Congregants from Tree of Life Congregation in Squirrel Hill and Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Homewood will join together on the night of Wednesday, April 16, for a Passover Seder. While Jews and African-Americans have come together for community Seders in a few other cities, this is believed to be the first such Seder in Pittsburgh history. The Coalition began as an initiative of the United Jewish Federation. The Seder -- a traditional Jewish service that is conducted around a dinner table during the first two nights of Passover, which actually begins Saturday evening, April 19 -- will explore the journey from slavery to freedom that African-Americans and Jews have each taken. Seders, the centerpiece of the week-long holiday of Passover, involve a ritualized retelling of the story of the Israelite Exodus from Egypt. The story provides a bridge of connection to the African-American community and its much more recent history of slavery and liberation. The customized service for the April 16 event will include a dramatic retelling of the Passover story by Jackie Jonas, a professional storyteller and African-American Jew.

---Hispanics and Other Ethnic Markets Will Spend $60 Billion on Telecommunications---
In 2008, US ethnic communities will spend $59.8 billion on telecommunications services, accounting for over one-third of all residential telecom expenditures, according to a new market research study from The Insight Research Corporation. The largest minority group, Hispanics, representing 14.8 percent of the total U.S. population, will spend the most. The ability to tap into the increased spending power of the Hispanic-American, African-American, and Asian-American communities will be crucial to the survival of telecommunications providers over the next five years. The study reports that 65.5 percent of all Hispanic respondents now have cell phones, that Hispanics' average monthly household expenditures on cell phone service was more than 80 percent higher than the average household spend on wireline services, and of those Hispanics that own a cell phone, nearly four in five had a post-paid contract.
