---African-American youth convene Global Conference on Civic Leadership---
The Ron Brown Scholar Program, the nation’s leading scholarship program for African-American youth, recently convened its leadership conference to help propel African-American youth nationwide into global leadership positions. The 2008 Triennial Leadership Conference -- Local Service, Global Change – brought together nearly 240 Ron Brown Scholars and leading minds from the public and private sectors to help accelerate the entry of young African-Americans into civic leadership and further enhance opportunities in fields including public policy, media, health care, education and business. Michael Mallory, executive director of the Ron Brown Scholar Program, said: “The Ron Brown Scholar Program Leadership Conference is a catalyst for our efforts to bring more young people together and challenge them to solve national and international problems by serving as leaders in their own communities. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, (LDF), recently unveiled its new comprehensive non-partisan voter awareness program, "Prepared to Vote." John Payton, LDF President and Director-Counsel said, “Prepared to Vote is a program designed to raise every voter's awareness of the many obstacles in the electoral process that could affect their right to vote in the 2008 election. Through Prepared to Vote we hope to ensure that every eligible voter cases a vote that counts." Inspired by the Freedom School Model from the Civil Rights Movement, the Prepared to Vote Campaign seeks to empower communities of color by providing essential information prior to Election Day. Program components include community-based workshops, the dissemination of user-friendly materials, meetings with election officials, and a dynamic educational website (http://www.preparedtovote.org).

---Black students in public charter schools---
Results from four studies show Black students in public charter schools making important gains and outperforming their counterparts in traditional schools on standard academic tests. The studies are summarized in a new issue brief "The Color of Success: Black Student Achievement in Public Charter Schools," released by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. "Taken together, these reports provide encouraging news about public charter schools' effectiveness in helping raise the academic achievement of Black students who too frequently have been poorly served by traditional public schools," said Nelson Smith, President of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools." Closing the achievement gap is a long process, but charter schools are clearly helping lead the way toward that goal."

The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies (Joint Center) has named Dr. Brian D. Smedley, a co-founder and research director of The Opportunity Agenda and an expert on racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care, as Vice President and Director of its Health Policy Institute (HPI). In his new position, Smedley will oversee all of the operations of the Institute, which was started six years ago with funding from the W.K.Kellogg Foundation to explore disparities in health and to generate policy recommendations on longstanding health equity concerns. "With his colleagues, Brian Smedley has pioneered innovative strategies to center equity in state and federal health policy discussions, and has elevated The Opportunity Agenda into the forefront of innovation in the policy world," said Ralph B. Everett, President and CEO of the Joint Center.

The United States Black Golfers Association (USBGA); the Nation's Premiere Ethnic Golf Club announces the appointment of NFL Great and Hall of Famer, Tony Dorsett to its Board of Advisors, effective as of August 5, 2008. Mr. Dorsett will serve on the company's national sponsor acquisition committee and advise the directors in their sponsorship endeavors. "Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Dorsett has proven to the world of sports and corporate America that he is a demonstrated leader.' states S. E. Day, President of USBGA.
