---November Jobs Report---
Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recently commented on the November jobs report issued by the Department of Labor. "Today's jobs report is evidence that our recovery efforts are moving our economy in the right direction,” notes Pelosi. “After losing an average of 673,000 jobs per month in the final three months of the Bush Administration, the report for November showed a job loss of 11,000 jobs - the lowest level since the recession began in December 2007. The economy grew by nearly 3 percent in the third quarter, compared to a decline of 6.4 percent in the first quarter of 2009 - in large part because of the Recovery Act, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office. These economic trends are clear signs that our country is on the path back to job growth and illustrate that the economic policies of President Obama and the Democratic Congress are starting to work. But our work is not over. Too many people have lost their jobs, which is devastating for any household trying to make ends meet, pay the bills, and put food on the table. In the coming weeks, House Democrats will continue to build on our efforts to grow the economy and create jobs by investing in our infrastructure, helping local governments keep teachers, police officers, and firefighters on the payroll, and assisting small business owners."

---No measurable results for juvenile offenders---
As many states face budget shortfalls, a new report on youth convicted of serious offenses finds that stays in expensive institutional placements produced no measurable results.  Researchers found that even among youth committing serious (often violent) offenses, a large proportion turned away from serious offending after involvement with the court and were able to live successfully in their communities.  The research also shows that institutional placement appears to have no advantage over probation in reducing rates of re-arrest or self-reported offending.  The length of institutional stay also does not appear to make a difference. The report is the first in a series from a long-term study of juvenile offenders. The Research on Pathways to Desistance Study – a multi-site, collaborative project that was launched in 2000 – is designed to identify and better understand factors that contribute to desistance, or ceasing to commit additional crimes. For the full story, go to UnityFirst.com.

---Italian American Organizations condemn MTV’s  'Jersey Shore'---
UNICO National has been joined by many Italian American organizations, including Order of the Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) and the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) -- which are among the nation's largest Italian American organizations -- in calling upon MTV to pull the plug on its new series "Jersey Shore" that features ethnic slurs, violence and poor behavior to marginalize and stereotype Italian Americans. After viewing the debut of "Jersey Shore" UNICO National President Andre' DiMino, stated, "It's worse than I imagined. MTV has festooned the 'bordello-like' house set with Italian flags and red, white and green maps of New Jersey while every other cutaway shot is of Italian signs and symbols. They are blatantly as well as subliminally bashing Italian Americans with every technique possible." And in reference to the cast members, he continued, "They are an embarrassment to themselves, their heritage and their families." UNICO National is the nation's largest Italian American service organization, with local chapters throughout the United States.
