---DC Air---
The following statement by DCAir CEO Robert Johnson
concerning the United and USAirways merger agreement
was released: "I am pleased that United Airlines
and USAirways have agreed to submit to the Justice Department
for full review the proposed merger of the two airlines.
The merger, if approved, would create DCAir, a major
new airline operating out of Reagan National Airport,
serving 45 cities, flying 3 million passengers and generating
over 460 million dollars in annual revenue. In addition,
DCAir will become the nation's first African-American
owned airline of this magnitude and scope. DCAir will
have as a minority partner American Airlines, which
will strengthen its ability to compete against other
airlines as a cost effective and low fare carrier. I
believe that the merger as presented is in the best
interests of the flying public, and I urge the Justice
Department to approve it. Equally as important, I urge
the Bush Administration to recognize this unique opportunity
to bring about minority ownership in the nation's airline
industry in the form of DCAir. DCAir has the support
of elected officials from both political parties and
the unanimous endorsement of the Congressional Black
Caucus."
---Caring for our elders: new survey
released---
The Boomer population has redefined yet another aspect
of American society -- the "sandwich generation,"
according to a survey released by AARP. The sandwich
generation label has been used for decades to describe
those who provide care for both their children and their
parents. But, reflecting new realities, the latest sandwich
-- as seen by AARP and increasingly embraced by leading
experts and interest groups -- extends the label to
those likely to be managing the needs of immediate and
extended family, and even those not related by blood.
The AARP survey has important multi-cultural findings,
including the fact that large numbers of Asian Americans,
Hispanic Americans and African Americans provide care
for parents and other adults. Nineteen percent of non-Hispanic
whites participate in caring for parents and other older
adults, compared with 28 percent of African Americans,
34 percent of Hispanic Americans, and 42 percent of
Asian Americans. People born outside the United States
are more likely to provide such care (43 percent) than
those born in this country (20 percent). Most members
of the newly redefined sandwich generation welcome the
chance to help care for their parents despite the added
demands. But a sizable number -- 48 percent -- believe
they should be doing, or should have done, more for
their parents. Asian Americans, among the most active
caregivers, express the most guilt (72 percent), while
the figure for Hispanic Americans is 65 percent and,
for African Americans, 54 percent. Non-Hispanic whites
feel less guilty (44 percent).

---MTV Takes a Look At the Other
Side of Life in "Flipped'
What happens when a suburban mother suddenly finds herself
immersed in the petty politics of high school, while
her teenage daughter is strapped with the hectic responsibilities
of running a household and raising children? What might
change if a neo-skinhead became a prisoner of a concentration
camp? How would a man of privilege and wealth respond
to living on the streets? This transposition of identities
is the premise behind MTV's newest reality series "Flipped,"
in which people willingly surrender their lives for
a day to experience a completely different life. Premiering
on August 6th at 10:30 pm, the 1/2 hour series will
witness the epiphanies, the heightened sense of understanding,
and the appreciation that result from walking a mile
in someone else's shoes. After partnering with Oscar-
and Emmy-winning filmmaker Arnold Shapiro on "Scared
Straight '99," the follow-up to his critically
acclaimed film "Scared Straight!," MTV is
once again teaming up with Shapiro on "Flipped."
As each episode unfolds, viewers meet the subject(s)
who reveal how they feel about a variety of issues or
situations. Next, the audience is taken behind the scenes
to see just how a subject's reality has been altered.
Once everything is in place, the unscripted drama unfolds
as "Flipped" follows its subjects through
their experiences and witnesses their reactions. Several
of the episodes of the series, including the shows examining
racial discrimination and homophobia, will air in conjunction
with "MTV's Fight For Your Rights: Take A Stand
Against Discrimination" campaign.
