VUMA KENYA! is a new and exciting non-profit initiative that is the brainchild of a group of resourceful and socially connected young Kenyan professionals based in the US. They have decided to pool their resources in response to the recent post-election violence following the disputed December 27th Kenyan General Elections, in order to rally fellow Kenyans and concerned global citizens to bring an end to the violence and strife currently tearing their nation apart.
According to the Kenyan Red Cross, 575 people have been killed and approximately 300,000 internally displaced (IDPs), www.kenyaredcross.org. The majority of the displaced are from poor areas, and in the midst of the ethno-political tension and polarization, lies an IDP crisis waiting to implode, a Hurricane Katrina-like situation with Tsunami-scale consequences for their country.
VUMA KENYA! Initiative not only strives to highlight the plight of the internally displaced, but also to rally and mobilize Kenyans both in the Diaspora and in Kenya to be more proactive and socially conscious in addressing this humanitarian crisis. VUMA KENYA! Initiative seeks to encourage productive, peace-centered efforts to evoke change. To achieve this ambitious goal the group is planning to raise awareness using pop culture and the Internet as their main tools.
The Roxy is located at 279 Tremont Street; phone 617-338-7699.
